The Best Beauty Products Ever: Drugstore Cowboys

The Best Beauty Products Ever: Drugstore Cowboys

If there’s a new product or a trend happening, I am on it. In the past week it’s been fake hair, celebrity scents, Taylor Swifts red lips, CC creams and lash-growers.  I’m a beauty addict.  Want proof? When I was seventeen the New York Times followed me around makeup shopping for their fall fashion magazine. I wasn’t a celebrity, I was just well known around town as bizarrely interested in all things beauty. I still am.

So please tell me what you think or want or hate or love. My goal here at Yahoo is to find the answers for all your beauty questions best I can. I also would love you to teach me new things. Like: Do you like these now pixie cuts everyone’s getting, do they make you want to cut your hair off? Do you want to know a professionals opinion on whether you should do that? Lets talk. Do you wasn’t to know what lip gloss some movie star uses (not just are paid to say they use), or what’s the nail trend that’s about to happen so you can do it before anyone else? Ask away!

The best beauty tips and recommendations I’ve ever gotten have been from people. I believe people who have nothing to lose or gain by recommending these products and so, that’s me for you. I’ll be square with you on what works and what doesn’t. Because otherwise, what’s the point.

Staring today there will be a weekly product roundup, old and new, best and worst. I am setting up an email where you can send your questions in and I will answer them as best I can. Beauty is my life. Nothing is too big or too small. Enough talk: Lets get started: Here’s a shortlist of my drugstore beauty staples for skin, hair, makeup and nails.

Drugstore Cowboys
These are so fantastic, I would pay through the nose for them—but there's no need. They're fast, cheap and out of control amazing. They also sell out FAST so if you happen upon any of these dime store treasures, snap them up in bulk!

Rimmel London Lash Accelerator Endless Mascara, $9.99
I was running around interviewing women on the street for New York Magazine a couple years ago and this stunning girl with started talking to me in the pouring rain, I was fascinated because she was definitely wearing mascara, it was a beautifully natural one, and most incredibly it wasn’t smudging or clumping in this rain. It was as fresh and dewy as if she’d just applied it right there. Wow! Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara she told me. A friend had recommended it to her, who’d had it recommended it to her by someone else. Of course I bought it ASAP. It has some sort of complex, which is said to lengthen lashes, but I don’t know about that. What I do know is it’s the perfect texture for me—I get confused by the lengthening/thickening mascara jargon. I’m never sure if I want one or the other or both. And ever since it’s been the mascara I use every day. It goes on dark and beautifully glossy. When I pull out the wand it never has too much product on the brush, so no clumps, and even though it’s not waterproof, it never runs.

Maybelline Expert Wear Twin Brow and Eye Pencils, $3
Like most women I am obsessed with my brows. I have none! Pale and sparse and slapped on my face haphazardly, they are. They don’t match up and they don’t make sense. Many other varieties have come and gone but these cheapie ones been my go-to brows pencils since high school. I REALLY like that there’s two of them, so you can keep one at home and one in your bag, and the formula is hard and waxy, which you want with brow pencils—it means they’ll stay on longer.

Covergirl OutLast Lip Stains, $8
The best, best, best product ever. I have one of every color, one in every bag, I can’t express how much I love these. I don’t know what I’d do without them. Many other companies have versions of lip pens/stains but either they dry out quickly, or the color is too intense, or they suck the moisture out of my flesh — something’s always off. But these are perfect. There are all sorts of shades, and the colors are rich, and long lasting. Plus, they’re pretty true to what they color is on the packaging, so no unflattering surprises when you try it yourself.

Pink Armour Nail Gel, $10
A brilliant little one-off product found at Ricky’s, this is a super-nail strengthener that goes on clear, but with a beautiful rosepetal tint. It is SO flattering and pretty. I’ve had a bunch of friends try it on, and it looks good on all skin tones, Also you can just slap it on haphazardly while watching the Walking Dead, or whatever and it doesn’t ever look messy. Just glossy and lovely.

Caruso Molecular Steam Hot Rollers, $30
Years ago, one of the most glamorous women I’ve ever met took me into her bathroom and pulled these crazy looking red foam hot rollers and said, “THESE are why I was voted homecoming queen.” Bam! You know I went out and bought them. And there's no getting around the fact that they’re GENUINE old school: add water to the base and the spongy red rollers get hot and steam-filled. Then piece by piece, roll up pin, and wait for the steamed curls to dry all the way through. Unroll. Out will slide the most gorgeous, perfect, loose-yet-bouncy hair you’ve ever seen! Extra bonus: Since it’s all done with steam, not dry heat, it doesn’t damage hair one bit.
